Introduction to Environmental Science
The purpose of this course is to introduce you to the principles of the science of ecological systems, both natural and affected by human society, concentrating on those crucial to the maintenance of an urban industrial society. We will describe several different types of ecosystems, then show how science, law, planning, and various other disciplines interact in helping us understand some of the significant problems facing ecosystems in our country. Throughout the course, we shall be looking at those dimensions of various ecosystems that influence how they can be modified, improved, or repaired.
The required textbook is Ecology of a Changing Planet by Mark B. Bush (2nd Edition), published by Prentice Hall.
The course is taught by several different people, who organize it somewhat
differently. For specific information about the individual course offerings,
please see the listings prepared by the individual faculty involved.
